Michael Smith

Executive Deputy Secretary Michael Smith began his time in public service in the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s press office under former Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff.  He went on to serve as the director of communications at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and as the deputy director of communications to Governor Edward G. Rendell.  Most recently, Smith was deputy chief of staff at the Pennsylvania Treasury.  An Indiana County native, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Masters of Arts in Public Affairs from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is now pursuing a Doctorate in Public Administration at the Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg.

As executive deputy secretary, Smith will manage the day-to-day operations of the department, provide strategic counsel on issues, and coordinate matters involving other state agencies.  Smith, his wife, Staci, and their two sons live outside of Harrisburg.
