We’ve all been told at one point or another not to eat raw cookie dough…even though it’s SO good! And while we’re sad to be the bearers of bad news, we’re here to reaffirm that advice. Before you treat yourself to a spatula full of chocolate chip goodness, make sure you’re educated on what’s in the dough.

There is a danger in consuming both raw commercial pre-made cookie dough and the homemade types. Why? It’s widely known that eggs can have bacteria in them when uncooked, most often Salmonella. But did you know that raw flour, regardless of the brand, can also contain disease-causing bacteria? These bacteria can cause you to experience intestinal distress, vomiting or even kidney failure – none of which are a good recipe for a joyful holiday season!

Once cookies are baked to the correct temperature these harmful bacteria are killed. So, here’s some helpful hints:

  • Wash your hands before and after handling the cookie dough (actually, dough of any kind)
  • Tempting as it may be, don’t lick your spoon or beaters
  • Wash your counter tops and other equipment after mixing the dough
  • Be sure to bake the cookies to the listed temperature

Bottom line? Always cook your cookies.
