20150318_130131.jpgHerr Foods Inc. was founded in 1946 after James Stauffer Herr bought a small potato chip company for a mere $1,750. Since then, Herr’s has grown immensely, becoming a leader in the snack food industry. They produce over 340 snack food items in the retail distribution channel. As a family-owned company and PA Preferred member, they employ approximately 1,500 employees and have annual sales of over $250 million.

The Department of Agriculture is a state member with Food Export USA-Northeast, a non-profit organization that promotes the export of food and agricultural products from the Northeast region of the United States. We work together with Food Export to recruit Pennsylvania value-added food and agricultural product companies to explore international sales opportunities.

Over the past several years, through our membership services, Herr’s has utilized Food Export programs such as Buyers Missions, Focused Trade Missions, Export Advisor Program, Food Export Helpline and the Online Product Catalog to help aide in foreign exports. In 2016, as a result of the Sweets and Snacks Expo in Rosemont, Illinois, they made a sale with Tesco Stores, PLC in the United Kingdom, which boosted their international sales by20 %.

Within the snack food industry, Pennsylvania’s top export partners are Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. In 2016, Pennsylvania exported $84 million of snack foods, including over $58 million to Canada alone. Throughout the United States, Pennsylvania is the third largest exporter of snack foods, behind California and Illinois. From 2012 to 2016, the top snack food exports also featured sugar confectionery, cookies, waffles and wafers, chewing gum, crispbread, toasted bread, and gingerbread.
